Contempt hearing against Taj, Sharjeel adjourns

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of the contempt of court case against Sindh People’s Party leaders Taj Haider and Sharjeel Memon for criticizing the court verdict in Chairman NAB case until April 25.

Presiding over a three-member bench of the apex court hearing the case here, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said, “It is not something personal instead it is a matter of the honour of the court. Every one knows what will happen, if the system is not run collectively.”

The PPP leaders Taj Haider and Sharjeel Memon presenting them on court notice sought two months time for an exhaustive reply, but the court said that not more than 15 days time could be allowed.

Supreme Court Bar President, Asma Jahangir assisting the court argued that four persons were killed during the protest strike in Sindh, according to the interior ministry. The criminal cases registered during the incident should be investigated, she said.

Chief Justice remarked, “You are the people’s representatives, we all together had struggled for democracy.”

Later, the hearing was adjourned until April 25.

PPP provincial ministers, MPAs and other leaders in large number had also come to the Supreme Court on this occasion.

Additional security was arranged. Besides police rangers were also posted. All those who made a queue since early in the day at the Supreme Court building were allowed to enter after security check.

Prior to the court hearing, Taj Haider, Sharjeel Memon, Zulfiqar Mirza, Pir Mazharul Huque, Shazia Marri, Ayaz Soomro and others had arrived in the Chief Justice’s Court Room # 1. It is said that over 60 members of the Sindh Assembly were present in the court, which was jam-packed.
