
TRIPOLI: Thirteen rebels were killed in an air strike by the NATO-led coalition forces near Brega in eastern Libya, Qatari broadcaster Al-Jazeera reported Saturday, quoting rebel fighters.
Several rebels were also wounded when NATO planes dropped bombs on a rebel convoy near the eastern entrance of the oil port by mistake, the report said.
The rebels were at that time trying to recapture Brega which was earlier retaken by the Libyan government forces.
The friendly fire accident has not yet been confirmed by NATO. In Brussels, a NATO spokesman said the coalition forces were looking into the reports.
The Western military alliance took over from the United States the responsibility of overseeing military operations against Libya Thursday.
Al-Jazeera also reported that U.S. and Egyptian special forces were training Libyan fighters in eastern Libya and high grade weapons, including rockets, were being supplied to rebels from abroad.
In Tripoli, a crowd of local residents gathered outside the United Nations office to show support for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, carrying Gaddafi posters and shouting slogans against the NATO-led airstrikes.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama on Saturday condemned a US pastor's burning of the Koran, after violent protests at what he called an act of "extreme intolerance and bigotry" left 17 dead in Afghanistan.
Obama also reiterated his condemnation of the "outrageous" attacks by protesters as "an affront to human decency and dignity."
"No religion tolerates the slaughter and beheading of innocent people, and there is no justification for such a dishonorable and deplorable act," he added.
Ten people died amid fresh protests that began in the center of the main southern city of Kandahar and spread as police clashed with crowds on Saturday, a day after seven UN staff were killed in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the worst attack on the world body in the country since the 2001 invasion.
"The desecration of any holy text, including the Koran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry," Obama said in a statement honoring those killed in the attacks.
Kandahar is the spiritual heartland of the Taliban, who have fought an insurgency against President Hamid Karzai's government in Kabul and its Western allies since they were ousted by the US-led invasion.

MUMBAI: India became the World Cup champions after 28 years, defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets in an interesting final of the tenth World Cup here at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing a challenging target of 275, India completed their long-awaited victory, with a huge six by captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni, with ten balls to spare in the day-night final of the mega event.
It was for the first time that a host country won the final of the World Cup and India also became the first Asian country to become the champions twice.
India were the third country to lift this title two or more times after Australia (four) and the West Indies (two).
The architects of India’s historic win were Gautam Gambhir, who scored 97 off 122 balls with nine boundaries, and Dhoni, who remained unbeaten on 91, made from 79 balls with eight fours and two sixes.
India's start was disastrous when Virender Sehwag was lbw for nought second ball to Lasith Malinga.
Later, Sachin Tendulkar also departed after a brief, 14-ball innings of 18 runs when he steered fast bowler Lasith Malinga through the off-side only to be caught behind by Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to leave India 31 for two.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Secretary for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Masood Chishti on Saturday filed a reference in the Supreme Court of Pakistan to reopen the murder case of Zulifikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister and founder chairman of Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday accorded his approval for filing of the reference in the SC.
Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar had said," the President enjoys powers under Article 186 of the Constitution and has signed a reference for the reopening of Bhutto's murder case".
Bhutto was the first elected prime minister of the country and was hanged in 1979.
LAHORE: Provincial Secretary Health Fawad Hassan Fawad has stated that demands of young doctors pertaining to raise in salary and free of cost treatment to their family members have been accepted, SCI News reported on Saturday.
Secretary Health said that salary of house job doctors would be raised by Rs12,000, while post graduate under training doctors salary by Rs20,000. The raise in salary would be applicable from July 01, 2011.
After acceptance of young doctors’ demand, there is no reason left for strike, he said and added that demand of doctors for increasing Rs30,000 from medical officer to professor is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, young doctors are not satisfied with this announcement, saying that government should raise the salary by Rs30,000 besides providing security to them.
